NHRA at Firebird International Raceway

I live several miles from Firebird International Raceway, after race weekend I usually check out who is still in town. It’s free and as long as you have a good size lens, no one asks questions.

Arcosanti

Arcosanti is an experimental town that began construction in 1970 in central Arizona, 70 miles north of Phoenix, it was the first stop on my GPH 405 trip. Architect Paolo Soleri, using a concept he calls arcology started the town to demonstrate how urban conditions could be improved while minimizing the destructive impact on the earth. In the 30 or so years my professor has been doing the trip it is the first time he has had a class meet Paolo.

Dr. Martin Pasqualetti (Professor of Geography) and Roger Tomalty (Arcosanti)

Kayenta Coal Mine

On our second day we made our way to Peabody Energy’s Kayenta Mine, located on reservation lands on Black Mesa in Northeast Arizona. The mine operates through lease agreements with the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe and supplies approximately 8 million tons of coal annually to Navajo Generating Station in Page, AZ.

Navajo Generating Station

The final day of our trip we visited Navajo Generating Station, a coal-fired powerplant producing 2280 megawatts located on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Page, Arizona. Navajo Generating Station has three 236 meter high chimneys, which are among the tallest structures in Arizona. This plant provides electrical power to customers in Arizona, Nevada, and California.

Looking inside the boiler burning at 1100 degrees Celsius.

Glen Canyon Dam, another stop on our trip but I did not bring the camera on the tour.
